1. Young entrepreneurs needed for ABC’s Catapult program
The ABC is seeking young entrepreneurs, innovators and business masterminds who are using creative, inventive, possibly even unique methods to turn original ideas into reality to participate in its ‘Catapult’ program. The best entrants will have an opportunity to tell their stories on radio station Triple J.
Participants under 30 years of age who run their own business or not-for-profit organisation, or who are in the process of commercialising an invention or design are sought.

2. Student Diary Cover Competition prize
The producers of the Student Diary are seeking original student artwork for the cover and body of the 2007 Student Diary.
The winner will receive a $500 prize and the opportunity to have their work seen by more than 38,000 diary users. Entries must consist of a folio of up to five artworks in the form of originals, photographs or on disk. Front cover reproduction will be full colour, and the inside pages will be single colour.
Closing date is Friday 15 September. Only current University of Melbourne students may enter. All artworks must include name, student number and full contact details.

3. Growing Esteem implementation summary and update
In the past fortnight the Growing Esteem Review Bodies have been working on the following activities and issues:
* The R&RT Committee debated key issues raised in the DVC (Research)'s discussion paper 'Strategic Research Areas' and also considered two important papers from Taskforce member and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research Training) Professor Barbara Evans.
* The Curriculum Commission discussed a first draft of the final report on implementation of the Melbourne Model, heard a progress report on market research for the Melbourne Model and agreed to a final draft of the Academic Women in Leadership report on Graduate Attributes.
* The Knowledge Transfer Taskforce was presented with preliminary trends from the first phase of the analysis of the knowledge transfer scoping study.
* Service Framework Reference Group has been established to coordinate and steer the work that has been taking place in developing partnership agreements and will make recommendations to the Shared Service Review Implementation Group.

4. New Transition Program DVD
The Transition Program invites all staff members involved in first year teaching and support to view its new DVD for secondary school students. The DVD is an introduction to the excitement and the challenges of tertiary life. It includes interviews with staff and students, along with campus footage.
The DVD will be screened on Thursday 31 August at 1:15-1:45pm in Charles Pearson Theatre, ERC Building.

5. Spring book sale at the Melbourne University Bookshop
The Bookshop is currently holding its Spring Book Sale in the Baillieu Library store, with literally thousands of recently published books available.
Items include academic heavyweights from Cambridge, MIT and Palgrave presses and general interest fiction and non-fiction from Vintage, Penguin and Scribe amongst others.

6. Arno Herpe Memorial Foundation Scholarships
The Arno Herpe Memorial Foundation Scholarships were established to assist and encourage both undergraduate and postgraduate full-time students who wish to study at the University of Melbourne, and who are descended from Indigenous peoples of the South Pacific area (including but not limited to Australia and New Zealand).
In 2006 the following awards are available:
* at least one scholarship providing an annual allowance of $12,000
* an additional five awards to provide a payment of $12,000 for one year only.
Selection is based on financial need and academic merit, and the closing date is 29 September.

7. Union House Child-care Program
The MU Student Union will run a September Vacation Care Program from 18-29 September in Union House. The price is $38 per day per child, with an additional payment of $5 for excursion days.

8. Draft electronic Incident Report Form for comment
In an effort to improve the monitoring and closing out of corrective actions to prevent or reduce the risk of re-occurrence of reported EHS incidents, a new electronic (S3) Incident Report Form and system is currently in development. The system will operate using Themis workflows. The new system is scheduled to become operational in September 2006 and a trial of the system is anticipated to commence shortly.
For those without Themis access a revised hardcopy (S3) Incident Report Form is also in development.

9. Healthy volunteers required for bone density study
Healthy volunteers are required to participate in a clinical study conducted by an Honours student in the Department of Medicine (RMH/WH).
The study is investigating the measurement of mastocytosis disease activity and osteoporosis. Volunteers must be aged 18 or older, with no current or past history of current bone disease. All participants will receive study-related care and a check of their bone density at no cost.

10. Staff achievements
Congratulations to Associate Professor Jacqueline Rowarth, Director of the Office for Environmental Programs who is to be the inaugural Chair of Pastoral Agriculture at Massey University, New Zealand, from January 2007. Jacqueline has contributed significantly to the growth and development of the University’s Graduate Environment Program since her appointment in early 2005.
Congratulations to the Australian Centre’s Dr Nathalie Nguyen for winning a Harold White Fellowship for 2007 ($10 200) at the National Library of Australia for her project “Vietnamese Refugees: Perspectives and Perceptions”.
