1. Response to Level 2 Water Restrictions.
University Property and Buildings will ensure all use of water
will be undertaken as prescribed under the conditions at this
level. This means no lawns will be being watered. All irrigation
controllers have been set in accordance with the demand.
Manual systems will be turned off before 8am.
The use of hand held hoses is allowed, but will be kept to a
minimum
Should you see any irrigation systems on after 8am or before
11pm, please report this immediately to any of the following
people:
Dominic Ph: 8302 8585
Ian Ph: 8302 0830
Andrew Ph: 8310 8377
If there is no reply call, ext 46000
(This applies to all property within the restriction zone)
The only exception is when testing/repairing/installing systems
(permission to do so will be requested prior to the work being
undertaken from City West Water). When such work is taking
place, signs will say so.
The conversion to automated controllers is ongoing
At this juncture water features with recycling systems will remain
on. We anticipate this changing once the weather heats up.
Provision will be made for fish living in the ponds to be taken
care of.

3. Melbourne joins Neighbourhood Watch program
The University of Melbourne will become the first Australian university
to enter an official partnership with the national Neighbourhood Watch
program. Participation in the program is being managed by Campus
Watch, through Property & Buildings and is designed to augment the
University's existing range of crime prevention measures.
On Tuesday 19 August a VIP sale by Neighbourhood Watch official
partner, The Good Guys, Bayswater Bulk Brighton will be held for
University of Melbourne staff and students. The sale will include small
"take away on the day" items such as domestic appliances, personal
digital assistants and personal stereos, and there will be an opportunity
to secure larger appliances at the VIP rate with a small deposit.
Neighbourhood Watch representatives will provide security marking at
the sale. Staff and students are encouraged to bring along laptop
computers, scientific calculators, PDAs, mobile phones and other small
electrical items to be marked free of charge. Items that are marked in
invisible ink with ultraviolet pens are not permitted to be sold by
authorised second hand dealers, and are therefore less attractive to
thieves.
The sale will be held in the Student Union Grand Buffet from 11am - 2pm.
The Good Guys will accept cash, EFTPOS and credit card.
Personal cheques are not accepted. Both staff and students must show
University of Melbourne ID to be eligible for the discounted rate.

5. University's web site to change this week
Since April, the Web Centre has been working on improvements to the design,
navigation and technical quality of the university's main web site.
The new web templates and style sheets are standards-compliant. Usability
improvements to the design and navigation include:
- a library link from the home page and all top-level pages on the site
- clearer, more readable text
- search box in the top right corner of every page
The first batch of approximately 150 updated pages will go live late on Friday
1 August, and more pages will be updated during the next fortnight. As well,
new templates are being used on the News and Events sites:
http://uninews.unimelb.edu.au/
http://events.unimelb.edu.au/
Comments on the web site are always welcome. The new pages have a
"comment on this site" link at the foot of every page.
